Housing

Filed under: rant — gabe at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, March 27, 2007

I recently found out that our landlord will not be renewing our lease. He is moving into our place. Seriously.
So that means I have to move.
Let me know if you have a spot, want to get a place, or know someone who can do either.

I plan to live somewhere in MPLS or in close vicinity to it.
But am open to suggestions.

Preparation, Moderation, Stimulation.

Sometimes I get so twisted up in thought processes until I can’t see anything straight.
I’ll get so worked up about something that I make this once lumbering tree whose shadow I was afraid of, into an arrow. I just widdle away until there is nothing left, but what I want to see. And soon it becomes an arrow in my back or a splinter I just discard. But what a waste of time. What a waste of a tree.

“Casimir Pulaski Day” by Sufjan Stevens. Everything I wish to do in life. Just write songs that are great. And perform them. And have one kid go home and find an old dusty banjo and start playing.

I make to-do lists for my days off and just sort through things, put them back where they were (in a pile) and eat cookies. Hopefully I have milk.

the Pope, the Burning, and the Afterthoughts

The Pope said in some sort of news conference that Jesus Christ was the only way to Heaven in some words. This should not come as a shock to anyone. He is the highest ranking official in the Catholic church, that’s what he’s there to do.

Muslims become enraged and burn flags in the streets. A nun is killed.
Talk radio reports that Muslims have a double standard, that it is okay for them to react in violence but no one else.

I take the most beef with why they are so up in arms about the whole matter. Christianity has been here for awhile. It’s not like this is late-breaking news about the thoughts of the Pope. I’m sure he could have worded it differently, made it more politically correct, but I think it’s refreshing to hear someone be honest about their beliefs.

I only hope that they both realize that they are all fighting the same fight, breathing the same air, hopefully trying to be great people to this earth and its inhabitants.

music

I don’t care what anyone else says, laying in bed perfectly healthy enough, tons of things that should have been done.. just laying in bed and listening to music is the life.

If I ever won the lottery I’d do lots of travelling, but in between travelling, I’d be laying around listening to music, wondering where these melodies came to these people, wondering what these lyrics mean to my friends on the West Coast, if the liner notes are in Spanish in Spain.. if Spain has even encountered this kind of music.

And I hope. I hope someone else is laying on their bed listening. It doesn’t even have to be listening intently, like a lecture or a serious discussion. Let your mind wonder in and around the music. Wonder how you are track 7 of this playlist and it had only just started.

And I share. I share this with you. Take a breath and put in your favorite CD. Put your computer on random or try to find your next audio obsession on pure volume.
And listen. (You can even fold laundry or do some light re-arranging)
And if you feel real motivated, throw on some stereo headphones for a few songs, listen to what technology has given you. A musician in Stereo Sound especially for you.

the acoustic guitar

for all the glory of the arena rock bands, and the newly re-incarnated synth players, and all the vast arrangements of lush sounds from bands LIKE zero 7.

you can’t beat a good singer/songwriter belting out what he feels, what he sees, what he believes.
i’ll put up my playlist entitled ‘premiere basement’ .. where-in, it’s all songs that would be the best to hear live in a basement having a good, memorable time.
MEMORABLE is the key, i mean anyone can play ‘glycerine’ wasted out of their mind and wake up with 4 phone numbers smeared on their right arm. anyone can play ‘wonderwall’ and wait for someone to do the echo on the chorus.. but if you don’t capo on the 2nd fret, i’ll probably punch you in the face, regardless of if i can stand at that point in the night.

but yes, singer/songwriters bring that much more into a song when it’s just them and a guitar. sometimes a piano can work, but i prefer guitar mostly, unless it’s ‘julia’ by our lady peace. because that is ridiculous. and a few songs howie day performs with a piano, like ‘amy’.
