Spinal Tap, Red Hot Chili Peppers, CCR

It was tribute band night at the 7th Street Entry.
Spinal Tap turned out to rock and be merry with us Americans. They (the Early Effect) played a rock solid set, including all the greats, including stage props of a kilt, a cucumber, and STONEHENGE.
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Commotus Pax) were eh. The bass player was phenomenal. He made the band watchable because Flea leaves HUGE shoes to fill and he did it justice. The guitar player had a HORRIBLE pedal which he KEPT USING. The lead singer and bass player both went over and turned it off during different songs. The guitar player didn’t get it and tried to fake everything from soloes to riffs, and both were bad. He had alright energy, but everything else about him screamed nu-metal. Same with the drummer who over-emphasized a lot of double-bass drum parts, but was solid through most the set.

CCR (the Vintage Mink) were great. I guess they are usually a power trio, but played with another guitar and a sax player for half the set. Played great songs, great 3 part harmonies, and great jams. I got down and found out how out of shape I was. I was heaving for breath but refused to leave the dancefloor, as I had worn flannel and cowboy boots with no reason. But having them play made it known, I was wearing both to get down with my nitty gritty self as I sang a long with a great night cap of good ol’ fashioned, swampy rock’n'roll.

And Sunday, today, my band, the Sequoia plays the Varsity Theater. 7 PM Doors. I am so ready for this. A storm is coming and I’m riding it full steam ahead.
